Nielsen's usability heuristics as a working tool
After this you can run a heuristic evaluation of any interface and produce a specific, prioritised list of problems.
Why it matters
Ten heuristics (visibility of system status, match to the real world, user control, consistency, error prevention, recognition over recall, flexibility, minimalist design, error recovery, help) that have held up for thirty years. Learn them as an *evaluation instrument*, not trivia: walk a real flow, note each violation against a heuristic, rate its severity. This is directly reusable, because the app critique interview round is essentially a heuristic evaluation performed out loud. Trap: listing violations without severity, which reads as nitpicking rather than judgement.
How to use this resource
Each heuristic paired with a real product example, which is what makes them stick. Recent enough that the examples are apps you use.
