Design strategy: from diagnosis to bets
After this you can write a design strategy that diagnoses the current situation, chooses a guiding approach, and commits to a small number of actions, and you can recognise a 'strategy' that is really a list of goals.
Why it matters
Strategy is a set of choices about where to focus and what not to do, grounded in a diagnosis of the situation. Design strategy applies that to the experience a product or organisation offers and to how design itself is practised. Focus on the diagnosis (most bad strategies skip it) and on bets that exclude alternatives. Trap: a 'design strategy' that is a list of aspirations ('world-class, user-centred, consistent'). If it does not tell a team what to stop doing, it is not a strategy.
How to use this resource
A lecture by a well-known strategic designer on what strategic design is and how it operates at organisational and civic scale. Broader than product design, which is what makes it useful at this level.
