Connecting design work to product strategy
After this you can state your product's strategy (target users, value proposition, business goals) and use it to argue for or against a piece of design work.
Why it matters
Senior designers are expected to understand why the company is building what it is building, well enough to push back. A product strategy answers who it is for, what problem it solves for them, why they would choose it, and how that makes money; design decisions that cannot be traced to it are either taste or noise. Focus on the vocabulary and on the habit of asking which strategic goal a request serves. Trap: confusing a roadmap (a list of things to build) with a strategy (the reasoning that makes some things worth building and others not).
How to use this resource
Eight minutes from a product-strategy author introducing a compact strategy model: target group, needs, product, business goals. Simple enough to apply to your own product the same day. Written for product managers, which is the point: it is the language your PM uses.
