North star metrics and metric hierarchies
After this you can propose a north star metric for a business, test it against the criteria of a good north star, and connect it to team-level input metrics.
Why it matters
A north star metric captures the core value customers get from the product and predicts long-term success; input metrics are the levers teams pull to move it. Choosing it is a strategic act: it decides what gets attention. Test candidates hard: does it reflect customer value, does it lead revenue, can teams influence it, can it be gamed? The trap is picking revenue, which is an outcome, not a guide.
