Choosing the right chart and designing it to make one point
After this you can pick a chart type from the question being asked, remove clutter, and use colour and titles to direct attention to the finding.
Why it matters
Chart choice follows the question: comparison (bar), change over time (line), distribution (histogram or box plot), relationship (scatter), part-to-whole (sparingly, a stacked bar). Then design: a title that states the takeaway, direct labels instead of legends, one highlight colour and grey for everything else. The traps are pie charts with many slices, dual axes, truncated bar axes and rainbow colour schemes.
