The junior market in 2026, honestly
After this you can state realistic expectations about competition, timelines and pay for a first software engineering job where you live.
Why it matters
The 2026 entry-level market is competitive. Fewer junior roles are advertised than in 2021, every posting gets many applicants, and AI tools mean employers expect juniors to be productive faster. People still get hired every week, but the bar is a deployed, defensible project and the ability to explain it, not a certificate. Look up salaries for your actual city and country rather than trusting US numbers from YouTube. Decide now how many months you can sustain ten hours a week; this roadmap gets you to a hireable level in roughly ten months at that pace. Trap: both 'coding is dead' and 'learn to code in 12 weeks and earn six figures' videos are selling something. The truth is slower and less dramatic.
