Turning a spec into small tasks you can finish
After this you can break a written specification into a list of small, ordered tasks, each finishable in an evening.
Why it matters
Before writing code, turn the spec into tasks. Each task should produce something you can see working: 'API returns list of books', 'form creates a book', 'deployed with an empty list'. Order them so the app is runnable end to end as early as possible, then deepen. Writing user stories is a useful habit even when you are the only person on the project, because it forces you to say who needs what and why. Trap: building every layer fully before connecting them. Get a thin slice working through all layers first.
